(by Kyler)
I just heard from Dr. Payner. The news seems significantly better than what I expected.
Here's what I got from the explanation. (Word spelling and usage corrections are welcome.)
- The tumor is a lymphoma. It originated in the lymph nodes, not the brain.
- The tumor is considered malignant.
- Surgical treatment is not recommended.
- Chemotherapy possibly followed with radiation therapy is recommended. We are planning to hear from Dr. Workman soon in order to schedule an appointment for consultation.
- I verified that exercise is o.k. Dr. Payner seemed surprised when I told him that the reason Dad didn't answer the phone was that he was probably out jogging, but he said that is fine.
- One of the drugs Dad takes ("Dexa" something) should shrink the tumor. Dad has been fighting me to stop taking the drugs because he feels fine.
- Expectations are high for a significant recovery! I don't want to get "false hope" as Misha and I discussed today, but Dr. Payner made me feel as though there is a good chance that treatment will be effective. He said not to expect Dad back "to 100%" but I'd be thrilled to have him just stay as he is!
- Dad has an appointment with Dr. Workman on Wednesday the 20th.
Thank you to all who are thinking of Wally. It means more to him (and me) than you might realize.
